**LONDON -** The United Kingdom has officially joined forces with Italy and Japan to develop a new 6th generation stealth fighter aircraft, marking a significant step towards countering rising military threats from Russia and China.
The project, dubbed the Global Combat Aircraft Programme (GCAP), merges the UK and Italy’s Tempest Project with Japan’s F-X programme. Prime Minister Keir Starmer gave the final approval for the project last week, putting an end to uncertainty over the UK’s involvement due to concerns about the high costs.
A formal announcement of the GCAP is expected in the coming weeks. The trilateral agreement designates the UK as the base for the joint government headquarters.
The GCAP aims to develop a next-generation combat aircraft capable of surpassing current technological boundaries. This includes features like advanced networking capabilities, open systems architecture, and the ability to deliver both conventional and nuclear payloads.
The multi-billion dollar project is slated for completion in 2035, with key players including BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, Leonardo Aerospace, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.
Upon completion, the GCAP will be the second 6th generation stealth fighter aircraft in the world, following closely on the heels of the United States’ B-21 Raider Bomber.
**The B-21 Raider Bomber**
The B-21 Raider, manufactured by Northrop Grumman, boasts advanced stealth technology, a robust network infrastructure, and the capability to deploy a range of munitions. The digital bomber utilizes cloud technology for aircraft operations and is designed to counter advanced anti-access, area-denial systems.
Its name pays homage to the Doolittle Raid of World War II, a pivotal mission that shifted momentum in the Pacific theater.
