Mon Nov 11 13:43:09 UTC 2024: ## Dominica Celebrates Resilience After Hurricane Maria, Prime Minister Says

**ROSEAU, DOMINICA** – Dominica’s Prime Minister, Dr. Roosevelt Skerrit, has lauded the nation’s remarkable resilience in the wake of devastating natural disasters, particularly Hurricane Maria in 2017. Speaking at the Dominica Labour Party Delegates Conference, Dr. Skerrit declared, “The world cannot talk about resilience unless they talk about the Commonwealth of Dominica.”

Hurricane Maria, a Category 5 storm, inflicted widespread destruction on the island, causing extensive damage to infrastructure, homes, and agriculture, and leaving many homeless. The island experienced power outages, water shortages, and disruptions in healthcare and education. Dominica’s economy, reliant on agriculture and tourism, suffered a severe blow.

However, against all odds, Dominica has defied expectations and rebuilt itself in just 24 months. The country has successfully implemented numerous initiatives, including climate resilience projects, emergency agricultural livelihoods programs, and a housing recovery program. The housing program, according to Dr. Skerrit, is “the envy of the world.”

Dr. Skerrit emphasized that the Labour Party prioritizes the well-being of the Dominican people, ensuring their needs remain central to all policies. He highlighted improvements in healthcare, education, infrastructure, and social protection for vulnerable populations.

“Our work is not over,” Dr. Skerrit acknowledged, “but it is our shared struggle that has brought us victories, victories that have improved the lives of our people.” He further stressed that the Labour Party welcomes all to join their efforts in building a stronger and more resilient Dominica.
