**Pune, India** – The holy basil, Tulsi, is revered in Hindu culture and holds a special place in the hearts of devotees. Known for its numerous medicinal and spiritual benefits, Tulsi is considered an embodiment of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity.

This year, the Tulsi Vivah, a ritualistic marriage of the Tulsi plant, will be celebrated between 13th and 15th November.

“Tulsi is considered a divine plant and its worship brings blessings from all deities,” says a local religious scholar. “It is believed that a home with a Tulsi plant is free from negative energy and diseases.”

The scholar cites a Sanskrit verse which translates to “The house where Tulsi resides is like a holy shrine, and Yama’s messengers (disease and misfortune) cannot enter.”

Tulsi’s medicinal benefits have also been recognized by science. A historical anecdote, documented in the book “Ka, Kasyasaathi?” by Sudha Dhamankar, recounts how a Tulsi plantation eradicated a rampant malaria outbreak in Pune.

“Tulsi’s medicinal properties are deeply ingrained in our culture,” says the scholar. “Our ancestors encouraged the consumption of water infused with Tulsi leaves, believed to protect against various ailments like fever and malaria.”

Even in modern urban settings, where space is limited, growing a Tulsi plant is encouraged. The plant acts as a natural air purifier, purifying the surrounding air and promoting well-being.

The ritualistic marriage of the Tulsi plant symbolizes the union of purity and prosperity. The vibrant celebration signifies the deep-rooted respect and reverence for the plant and its multifaceted benefits.
