**Kazan, Russia (10 November 2024):** Sri Lanka’s application to join the BRICS group of nations is currently under review, the Russian Embassy has confirmed. While reports suggesting a rejection have circulated, the embassy insists these are inaccurate.

Sri Lanka formally submitted its application during the recent BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, with Foreign Affairs Minister Vijitha Herath urging member states to support their bid.

The summit itself was a diplomatic success for Russia, showcasing the group’s growing influence. Over 30 delegations, including 22 heads of state or government, and representatives from international organizations like the UN attended. The event solidified BRICS’s commitment to strengthening ties with the Global South and shaping a multipolar world order, particularly in the financial and trade sectors.

Sri Lanka’s application will be considered in due course alongside other bids, through consultations and consensus among BRICS members.
