**Washington, D.C. -** A South Korean feminist movement known as “4B”, which encourages women to boycott heterosexual marriage, dating, sex, and childbirth in protest against misogyny, is gaining traction among young American women in the wake of the recent US election.
The movement, originating from protests against revenge porn in 2018, has seen a resurgence of interest following Donald Trump’s victory. Many young women view Trump’s embrace of figures like Joe Rogan and his history of misogyny as a rejection of feminism.
“It’s heartbreaking to know that in this country you only matter if you’re a straight white man,” says McKenna, a 24-year-old woman from a rural, conservative state. “I will not let another man touch me until I have my rights back.”
Following Trump’s win, online searches for “4B” have spiked by 450%, with the highest interest coming from states like Washington, D.C., Colorado, and Vermont.
The movement’s core principles resonate with many young American women who are increasingly disillusioned with the political climate and feel their rights are under threat. The 4B movement offers a form of collective resistance, encouraging women to build safe communities and prioritize their own wellbeing.
While some view the movement as extreme, others find it empowering. McKenna explains, “Now when I go out with my girlfriends meeting people, instead of mingling to find a date, I’m going to mingle to get change. When men come on to me, I’m just gonna push back.”
The 4B movement is a powerful example of how women are utilizing the power of online platforms to challenge traditional norms and seek solidarity in a changing world. Whether it leads to lasting changes in societal attitudes towards gender equality remains to be seen, but it has undoubtedly captured the attention of young women seeking agency and autonomy in their own lives.
