Mon Nov 11 15:30:00 UTC 2024: ## American Teenager Lily Yohannes Commits to USWNT, Declining Dutch Offer

**Washington, D.C. -** 17-year-old midfielder Lily Yohannes has chosen to represent the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT), despite being courted by the Netherlands. Yohannes, who was born in Virginia but moved to the Netherlands at 13 to play for Ajax, had been exploring obtaining Dutch citizenship.

“After much consideration, I have decided to commit to represent my country, the United States,” Yohannes stated in an Instagram post. “The U.S. is my homeland, my birthplace, and where my extended family resides.”

Yohannes’ decision comes just weeks before the USWNT travels to the Netherlands for a friendly match on December 3rd. The Dutch federation had publicly campaigned for Yohannes to play for their national team.

Yohannes debuted for the USWNT in June, scoring in her first appearance under coach Emma Hayes. She was also considered for the Olympic roster, though she was not ultimately selected. Hayes expressed her support for Yohannes’ decision, emphasizing that “it needs to be right for Lily.”

“I want to extend my deepest gratitude to the United States and Dutch Football Federations for their unwavering support and patient guidance,” Yohannes said in her statement. “Their dedication and encouragement have been invaluable.”

Yohannes’ commitment is a significant boost for the USWNT, which is looking to rebuild after a disappointing World Cup performance. She is considered a rising star in the sport and has the potential to be a key player for the team in the years to come.
