Tue Nov 12 16:22:37 UTC 2024: ## Garbage Dumps Along Kudamurutti River Raise Health Concerns in Tiruchi

**TIRUCHI, November 12, 2024** – Residents and road users along Konakarai Road in Tiruchi are expressing growing concerns over the indiscriminate dumping of household waste and open defecation near the Kudamurutti river.

The riverbanks are littered with rotting garbage, including building debris, glass bottles, and single-use plastic goods. This situation has attracted stray animals and created a foul stench, raising concerns about public health and environmental pollution.

The worst affected area is near a closed-off bathing ghat near Cauvery College for Women, where the lack of functioning bathrooms has resulted in open defecation. This has further exacerbated the sanitation issues in the area.

Local residents have repeatedly appealed to the Tiruchi Corporation to address the issue, but their pleas have gone unanswered. K. Bhagyalakshmi, a resident, emphasized the need for concrete garbage bins to deter further dumping.

“We have repeatedly requested the Corporation to take action, but nothing has been done,” she said. “The area is secluded, making it easy for people to dump their garbage in the river, despite the presence of a waste segregation facility on Konakarai Road.”

When contacted, a Corporation official assured that the area would be cleaned within a week.
