Tue Nov 12 15:00:52 UTC 2024: ## Renowned British Painter Frank Auerbach Dies at 93

London, England – Renowned artist Frank Auerbach, a prominent figure in the “School of London” movement, passed away on Monday at the age of 93. His death was confirmed by Frankie Rossi Art Projects, who described him as “a dear friend and remarkable artist.”

Auerbach, born in Berlin in 1931, fled Nazi Germany as a child refugee in 1939 under the Kindertransport scheme. Tragically, his parents, an engineer and an artist, were both killed in the Auschwitz concentration camp.

He arrived in England and studied at the St Martin’s School of Art and the Royal College of Art, dedicating his life to painting. Auerbach rose to become one of the most celebrated artists of the 20th century, known for his figurative works, often rendered with thick layers of paint to achieve near-abstract yet recognizable landscapes.

He remained dedicated to his artistic vision, working from the same north London studio from 1954 until his death, despite changing artistic trends. As he told The Guardian in an interview, “I’m trying to find a new way to express something,” and his relentless pursuit of artistic innovation led him to discard almost all of his initial work.

Auerbach achieved global recognition for his work, including representing Britain at the Venice Biennale in 1986 and winning the Golden Lion top prize. In recent years, his paintings have fetched high prices, with his “Mornington Crescent” selling at Sotheby’s for $7.1 million, a record for the artist.

His most recent exhibition, “Frank Auerbach: The Charcoal Heads,” opened at London’s Courtauld Gallery in February.

Frank Auerbach leaves behind a legacy of powerful and evocative artwork, along with his son, Jacob Auerbach.
