Mon Nov 11 18:47:25 UTC 2024: ## Curviness Trumps Waist-to-Hip Ratio in Female Attractiveness, Study Finds
**Konstanz, Germany** – New research published in *Scientific Reports* challenges the long-held belief that a woman’s waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) is the primary determinant of attractiveness. Two experiments conducted by researchers Ronald Hübner and Emily Sophie Ufken at the University of Konstanz suggest that **curviness, a broader measure of body shape, plays a more significant role in perceived attractiveness**.
The study involved participants rating the attractiveness of line drawings of female figures. In the first experiment, where WHR and curviness were perfectly matched, participants generally rated figures with a WHR of 0.7, the traditionally considered ideal, as most attractive. However, the second experiment, which varied curviness independently of WHR, revealed a more nuanced result. **For broader body widths, curviness consistently outweighed WHR as a predictor of attractiveness.** Figures with a moderate level of curviness were rated as most attractive, regardless of their WHR.
“The results clearly show that curviness is far superior to the WHR in predicting a woman’s body attractiveness,” concluded the study authors.
The findings suggest that **a simple measure like WHR might be an oversimplification** when assessing attractiveness, particularly for women with larger body frames. Curviness, which encompasses the overall contours of the torso, offers a more comprehensive understanding of body shape and its role in perceived beauty.
While this research provides valuable insights, the study authors acknowledge that it relied on line drawings and not real body shapes. Further research is needed to confirm whether the findings hold true for real-world evaluations of female attractiveness.
