**New Delhi, November 12, 2024:** The Delhi High Court has finally allowed Delhi University (DU) to begin counting votes for the September student union elections, provided the university is satisfied with the restoration of public property defaced during the campaigning period.
The court had earlier ordered the university to hold off on announcing the results, citing blatant misuse of “money and muscle power” and the lack of restoration of defaced property. Despite most colleges being cleaned, some campaign material remained, prompting the court to give candidates a week to remove it.
Candidates have assured the court that all campaign materials will be removed, allowing the university to begin counting on or before November 26th.
The court expressed its understanding of the candidates’ youth and granted them a second chance. It also called on DU Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh to take action against students responsible for the property damage.
Student organizations, including the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), have welcomed the verdict, emphasizing the importance of announcing the results for the sake of both voters and candidates. The absence of a student union has impacted various aspects of student life, including the delivery of student grievances and even the delay in hostel allotment.
The university has stated it will adhere to the court’s orders and has confirmed that most restoration work is complete. The counting process is expected to be transparent and conducted with integrity.
