Tue Nov 12 14:59:28 UTC 2024: ## Doctor Suspended After Newborn’s Death Sparks Outrage in Tamil Nadu

**Mayiladuthurai, Tamil Nadu:** The suspension of an obstetrician-gynaecologist (OB-GYN) at the Government Hospital in Mayiladuthurai has sparked controversy, drawing criticism from doctors’ associations and medical professionals. The doctor was hired under the National Health Mission scheme to address the shortage of specialists in the state.

The suspension, which followed the death of a newborn a few days after birth, was ordered by the Joint Director (JD) of Health Services following protests by the family members and relatives who alleged medical negligence. However, the Service Doctors and Post Graduates Association (SDPGA) and Tamil Nadu Medical Officers Association (TNMOA) have condemned the decision, calling it a knee-jerk reaction that sets a dangerous precedent.

The SDPGA argued that suspending the doctor, who was hired under a special scheme to address the shortage of specialists, sends a chilling message to other doctors. They emphasized that while the newborn’s death is tragic, the doctor had made efforts to ensure the mother’s safety and a safe delivery. The association further pointed out that the baby’s death was linked to a complicated delivery involving shoulder dystocia, a known medical complication.

The TNMOA also criticized the suspension, stating that it was implemented without proper inquiry. They urged the district administration to address the situation through dialogue instead of taking hasty action.

The controversy highlights the critical shortage of medical specialists in Tamil Nadu, particularly in the field of obstetrics and gynecology. The lack of available doctors has led to increasing vacancies in CEmONC (Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care) centres, leaving many patients without access to essential care. This case serves as a stark reminder of the need to address the staffing shortages in government hospitals and provide proper training and support to medical professionals.
