Tue Nov 12 16:17:35 UTC 2024: ## Dev Uthani Ekadashi 2024: Auspicious Occasion Marks the End of Chaturmas
**New Delhi, November 12, 2024:** Dev Uthani Ekadashi, one of the most significant Ekadashi festivals, was celebrated today across India. This day marks the awakening of Lord Vishnu from his four-month long slumber (Chaturmas).
According to Hindu scriptures, Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the universe, enters a state of yogic sleep (Yog Nidra) on the Ekadashi of the Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) of Ashadh month, bringing a halt to auspicious events like weddings and other celebrations. The four-month period, known as Chaturmas, ends with Lord Vishnu’s awakening on the Ekadashi of the Shukla Paksha in Kartik month, signifying the resumption of auspicious activities.
The auspicious time for observing the Dev Uthani Ekadashi fast began on November 11th evening at 6:46 PM and concluded on November 12th evening at 4:04 PM. The breaking of the fast (Parana) will take place on November 13th, between 6:42 AM and 8:51 AM.
This year, the day is particularly significant due to the presence of two auspicious yogas – Ravi Yoga (from 6:42 AM to 7:52 AM) and Sarvartha Siddhi Yoga (from 7:52 AM to 5:40 AM on November 13th). Devotees can perform special pujas and rituals during these auspicious periods.
Traditionally, devotees observe a fast on Dev Uthani Ekadashi, which is believed to grant liberation (Moksha). The day is also marked by the symbolic marriage of the sacred tulsi plant with the Shaligram stone, representing Lord Vishnu’s consort, Lakshmi.
The festival is observed with great enthusiasm across India, especially in North India. Devotees decorate their homes with diyas, rangoli, and flowers, and perform special prayers and rituals.
**Important Points to Remember:**
* Devotees should observe a strict fast on this day, consuming only water or other liquid substances.
* Individuals suffering from illness, elderly people, children, or those who are extremely busy can observe a single-meal fast.
* Avoid consuming onion, garlic, meat, alcohol, and stale food on this day.
As Dev Uthani Ekadashi marks the end of the Chaturmas period, it is considered an auspicious time to begin new ventures, celebrate weddings, and embark on new journeys.
