Tue Nov 12 07:09:12 UTC 2024: ## Dev Uthani Ekadashi 2024 Celebrated on November 12th: Lord Vishnu Awakens After Four Months of Sleep

**New Delhi, India:** Dev Uthani Ekadashi, a significant Hindu festival, is being celebrated today, Tuesday, November 12th, 2024. This day marks the awakening of Lord Vishnu after his four-month long sleep, known as “Chirayoga Nidra.” According to Hindu beliefs, Lord Vishnu falls asleep during the month of Ashadh (July-August) and awakens in Kartik (October-November), symbolizing the return of auspiciousness and the beginning of the “Manglik” (auspicious) period.

The Ekadashi tithi (lunar day) began on November 11th at 6:46 PM and will end on November 12th at 4:04 PM. Dev Uthani Ekadashi is observed based on the “Udayatithi” (sunrise) which falls on November 12th, making today the day of celebration.

Devotees observe a strict fast on this day, abstaining from food and even water in some cases. It is believed that this fast brings about spiritual liberation. The fast is broken on November 13th, 2024 (Wednesday) between 6:42 AM and 8:52 AM.

Dev Uthani Ekadashi is also associated with the “Tulsi Vivah” (marriage of Tulsi plant), symbolizing the marriage of Lord Vishnu (in the form of Shaligram) to the Tulsi plant. This sacred plant is considered highly auspicious and is always kept in the worship of Lord Vishnu. The Tulsi Vivah is believed to bring marital bliss.

Other customs and traditions observed on this day include:

* Taking a bath early in the morning
* Avoiding sleeping on the floor at night
* Maintaining celibacy
* Avoiding all forms of conflict
* Abstaining from consuming tamasic foods (garlic, onion, meat, alcohol)
* Not breaking any branches of trees
* Avoiding rice and salt consumption on any Ekadashi
