Tue Nov 12 13:20:32 UTC 2024: ## Car Plows into Crowd in Southern China, Killing 35

**Zhuhai, China** – A 62-year-old man driving an off-road vehicle deliberately drove into a crowd of people exercising outside a sports center in Zhuhai, killing at least 35 and injuring 43 others, police reported Tuesday.

The incident, described as a “serious and vicious attack” by police, occurred at 7:48 pm local time on Monday but was only reported by authorities the following day.

Witnesses reported seeing at least 20 people lying on the ground and hearing cries of “terrorist” as ambulances arrived. Police confirmed the suspect, identified as Fan, was apprehended at the scene after attempting to flee.

Fan, who was treated at a hospital after inflicting severe neck injuries upon himself with a knife, is currently in a coma and unable to be interrogated.

An initial investigation suggests Fan’s motive was “dissatisfaction with the division of marital property from his divorce”.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered immediate efforts to treat the injured and demanded severe punishment for the perpetrator. A central government team has been dispatched to assist with the investigation.

The incident has highlighted concerns about public safety in China, where violent crime is relatively rare due to tight security and strict gun laws. However, recent knife attacks in major cities have raised public awareness of potential vulnerabilities.

Zhuhai, currently hosting China’s largest annual air show, is the site of the latest tragedy. The event, showcasing a new stealth jet fighter, has been overshadowed by the devastating incident.
