**Los Angeles, CA** – Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, the stars of the upcoming film adaptation of “Wicked,” shared their emotional journey during a recent interview at the Chateau Marmont. The actresses, who play the iconic roles of Glinda and Elphaba respectively, admitted to shedding tears frequently while discussing the project, reflecting the intense emotions they experienced on set.
Erivo described shooting a demanding dance scene with Grande, where tears flowed freely without any effort. “The tears would fall every single time,” she shared. “I didn’t have to try for them, they were always there.” Grande added, “And I’d catch them.”
“Wicked,” directed by Jon M. Chu, serves as a prequel to “The Wizard of Oz,” focusing on Elphaba’s journey before becoming the Wicked Witch of the West. The film follows Elphaba’s early days at Shiz University, where she’s forced to room with Glinda, a popular student who tries to help her fit in. However, Elphaba’s discovery of Oz’s dark secrets leads her to embrace her power and ultimately deliver a powerful performance of “Defying Gravity,” the show-stopping song that concludes the first film.
“Wicked Part Two,” which was filmed simultaneously, will be released in November 2024, continuing the story of Elphaba and Glinda. The first film is set to hit theaters on November 22, 2023.
