Sat Nov 09 08:40:00 UTC 2024: ## Murphy Vows to Fight Trump Administration, Cites Immigration Concerns
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has declared he will fight any policies he deems contrary to New Jersey’s values coming from the Trump administration, while also acknowledging opportunities for common ground. This follows the narrow victory of President-elect Trump in the state, despite a larger Democratic vote for other offices.
Assembly Minority Leader John DiMaio criticized Murphy’s stance, arguing that the governor needs to recognize that his values may not reflect those of all New Jerseyans. He added that the state needs to prioritize struggling families and businesses, rather than spending resources on political battles.
Murphy, however, highlighted instances of successful collaboration with Trump, including the approval of the Portal North Railroad Bridge and assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic. He also acknowledged Trump’s ability to connect with voters despite their best interests.
The governor expressed concern about immigration policies, stating he will take “inventive tacks” to protect immigrants. He cited his personal intervention to deter Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in a community near his home.
Murphy emphasized that his three-point victory in the 2021 gubernatorial race could serve as a warning sign for Democrats in New Jersey, signaling the need to assess the political landscape.
