Goa, once the undisputed king of Indian beach vacations, is facing a decline in tourism, with foreign visitor numbers plummeting to less than a fifth of pre-pandemic levels. The rise of cheaper and more exciting destinations like Sri Lanka and Thailand, combined with rising costs and negative experiences in Goa, are driving this trend.
A recent report by CEIC Data revealed that only 1.5 million foreign visitors came to Goa in 2023, a stark contrast to the 8.5 million visitors in 2019. Tourists from key markets like Russia and the UK are opting for Sri Lanka, drawn by its vibrant nightlife and affordable prices.
Social media is abuzz with complaints about Goa’s notorious “taxi mafia.” Travellers are reporting harassment, overcharging, and even physical threats from taxi drivers. The absence of ride-hailing services like Ola and Uber, banned by the state government due to pressure from local taxi unions, adds to the woes of tourists.
While Goa has recently seen an increase in domestic tourists through charter flights, the overall decline in foreign visitors is a significant blow to the state’s economy. As Southeast Asia continues to offer a more attractive proposition, Goa must address its issues with rising costs, poor tourist experiences, and restrictive transport policies to regain its lost glory as a top travel destination.
