Thu Nov 07 20:47:00 UTC 2024: ## European Leaders Urge Trump to Maintain Support for Ukraine Following US Election Win

**BUDAPEST, HUNGARY -** European leaders have expressed concerns and urged newly re-elected US President Donald Trump to avoid trade wars, maintain support for Ukraine, and uphold the global order following his victory in the US presidential election. The summit, hosted by Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban, a close ally of Trump, brought together nearly 50 European leaders in Budapest.

While many expressed their willingness to work with Trump, anxieties remain about his past policies and potential future actions. Concerns were voiced over Trump’s unpredictable behavior and potential for a trade war, as well as his previous brusque treatment of allies.

“We need dialogue, but we will not give up our principles,” stated Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden. Finland’s Prime Minister Petteri Orpo expressed concern about a trade war, urging for a “dialogue” with Trump to understand the risks involved.

The summit also addressed the ongoing war in Ukraine, with European leaders calling for continued support for the country. “It is in all our interests that the autocrats of this world get a very clear message that is not the right of might, that the rule of law is important,” stressed European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen.

Adding to the uncertainty, Germany’s three-party government collapsed just before the summit, raising questions about the future of the European Union. “One thing is for sure, Europe is not strong without a strong Germany,” emphasized European Parliament President Roberta Metsola.

The summit will focus on various issues including migration, economic security, and transatlantic relations, with a particular focus on the ongoing conflict in Georgia. The EU has suspended Georgia’s membership bid due to concerns over democratic backsliding.

The summit comes at a time of heightened uncertainty for Europe, facing a weakened Germany, a strained relationship with the United States, and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Leaders will be looking to find ways to navigate these challenges while maintaining unity and stability within the continent.
