Sat Nov 09 00:10:00 UTC 2024: ## Freshman Phenom Flagg Faces Veteran Challenge in Wooden Award Race

The race for the prestigious Wooden Award, recognizing the nation’s top men’s college basketball player, is heating up with a clash between youth and experience. Duke’s Cooper Flagg, a 6-foot-9 freshman sensation projected as the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA draft, is among the 41 upperclassmen on the Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 Watchlist, which was announced Thursday.

Flagg, who has drawn comparisons to NBA superstar LeBron James, made a strong debut with 18 points in Duke’s season-opening victory. He will be vying for the award against a field of experienced players, including reigning ACC Player of the Year RJ Davis of North Carolina, Kansas star Hunter Dickinson, and Alabama’s Mark Sears.

While Flagg is a frontrunner, his freshman status could be a hurdle. Only three players – Kevin Durant, Anthony Davis, and Zion Williamson – have won the award as freshmen. However, Flagg’s debut has generated buzz comparable to Williamson’s 2018-19 season, making him a formidable contender.

Flagg, however, remains focused on team goals and his own development. “Obviously, that’s a dream,” he said regarding the No. 1 draft pick, “but for me, it’s just about getting better every single day for my teammates and for myself and trying to win every single day.”

The Wooden Award will have a new winner this year after Purdue’s Zach Edey secured back-to-back victories in 2023 and 2024. The battle for the award promises to be intense as players are added and removed from the watchlist throughout the season, with a potential for unexpected outcomes.
