**Tripoli, Libya -** In a country scarred by years of conflict, a new cafe in Tripoli is pushing for a brighter future, one recycled brick at a time. Lamma, meaning “gathering” in Arabic, stands out not only for its unique, sustainable design but also for its commitment to promoting environmental awareness.

The cafe, built entirely from recycled materials like tires, wood, and construction waste, is a vibrant space showcasing Libyan art and hosting cultural events. Founder Louay Omran Burwais, an architect, emphasizes the importance of demonstrating the value of discarded materials, highlighting their potential for transformation.

“We are showing people that what is thrown in the street and may seem ugly or useless is actually still valuable,” Burwais told AFP.

Lamma, with its colorful walls adorned with plants and its intricate metal structures, offers a stark contrast to the war-torn landscape. The cafe serves as a meeting point for families, hosting art workshops for children and boasting a small library.

Art Director Roula Ajjawi highlights the cafe’s unique approach: “There are no places like this in Libya. We base everything on one aspect that we consider very important: recycling.”

With a lack of recycling facilities in Libya, Lamma aims to be a catalyst for change. The cafe demonstrates the potential of transforming discarded objects into works of art, a concept that is slowly catching on among locals.

“I love this place,” says regular customer Riyad Youssef. “The food is great, the service is excellent, and I appreciate the commitment to reducing waste. Every idea here is amazing.”
