A weekly special train, the Secunderabad-Shalimar Superfast Express, derailed near Howrah in West Bengal this morning, causing disruption to train services. Three coaches, including a parcel van and two passenger coaches, came off the tracks while passing through Nalpur station, located about 40 km from Kolkata. The incident occurred at 5:31 am, while the train was shifting tracks.
Thankfully, no casualties or major injuries have been reported so far. Relief trains and medical assistance have been dispatched from Santragachhi and Kharagpur to the derailment site. Buses have also been arranged to transport stranded passengers to their destinations.
The South Eastern Railway is investigating the cause of the derailment and has assured passengers of swift restoration of train services.
