Sat Nov 09 11:04:14 UTC 2024: ## Zoho CEO Slams ‘American Capitalism’ After Freshworks Layoffs

Zoho’s CEO, Sridhar Vembu, has launched a scathing critique of American capitalism, specifically targeting companies like Freshworks who prioritize shareholder value over employee wellbeing. His comments, posted on X (formerly Twitter), followed Freshworks’ recent layoff of 660 employees while simultaneously announcing plans to buy back company shares with $1 billion in cash.

Vembu drew parallels with tech giants like Nvidia and AMD, highlighting their success due to long-term investment in their engineers and engineers, many of whom are from Taiwan. He praised Taiwan’s commitment to talent and its creation of tech behemoths like TSMC despite having a small population.

He contrasted this with Intel’s focus on pleasing Wall Street, ultimately leading to their decline and losing ground to TSMC, AMD, and Nvidia. Vembu argued that the “American capitalism” model prioritizes short-term financial gains over long-term investments in people, ultimately leading to a “financialization” of the economy and pushing the country towards “civil war”.

While Vembu’s comments are a broad indictment of American business practices, there is a history of animosity between Zoho and Freshworks. Freshworks’ founder, Girish Mathrubootham, was a former Zoho employee, and in 2021, Freshworks settled a lawsuit accusing them of stealing trade secrets from Zoho. This past history adds a layer of personal friction to Vembu’s criticism.

Vembu’s comments have sparked a wider conversation about the merits of different business models and the social consequences of prioritizing short-term profits over long-term employee investment.
