Fri Nov 08 02:10:00 UTC 2024: ## Fluoride’s Future Uncertain as Trump Adviser Pushes for Removal from Water Systems

**WASHINGTON, D.C.** – The future of fluoride in public water systems is facing a potential shakeup as Robert F. Kennedy Jr., an advisor to President-elect Donald Trump, advocates for its removal. Kennedy, who has no medical or dental training, has publicly denounced fluoride as an “industrial waste” linked to various health problems, including arthritis, bone cancer, and IQ loss.

While the decision to add fluoride to water supplies rests with local jurisdictions, Kennedy’s stance is raising alarm among dental professionals. They argue that removing fluoride would lead to a significant increase in tooth decay, particularly among children. Dr. Meg Lochary, a pediatric dentist in Waxhaw, North Carolina, said, “As children continue to grow, they will have an increased cavity rate. We will eventually see an increase in tooth decay.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) emphasizes the importance of fluoride exposure through municipal water supplies, especially for families lacking dental care. Despite this, hundreds of communities across the U.S. have opted out of fluoridation.

Fluoride has been recognized as a key public health tool for decades, reducing tooth decay by up to 25%. Its benefits are well-documented, with studies showing it strengthens tooth enamel and reduces acid production in saliva.

While Kennedy’s claims of fluoride’s negative impacts have not been substantiated by scientific evidence, some studies have linked fluoride exposure to potential neurobehavioral issues in children. However, experts maintain that these studies are preliminary and do not warrant the removal of fluoride from water supplies.

Dr. Richard Besser, former acting CDC director, urges parents to have open conversations with their pediatricians about fluoride and its role in protecting children’s dental health. “Any parent should feel very comfortable asking their child’s doctor, ‘What should be my approach to fluoride to protect my child’s teeth?’” Besser said. “Those are appropriate questions, but saying that fluoride doesn’t have value flies in the face of the science and evidence.”

The debate over fluoride’s safety and efficacy continues, leaving parents to grapple with conflicting information. As Kennedy’s influence grows, the future of fluoridated water remains uncertain.
