Thu Nov 07 15:40:00 UTC 2024: ## Sumitomo Rubber USA Shuts Down Tonawanda Plant, Leaving 1,550 Employees Jobless

**TONAWANDA, N.Y. –** In a sudden announcement, Sumitomo Rubber USA has confirmed the closure of its Tonawanda facility, leaving 1,550 workers facing unemployment. Production at the plant, which manufactures tires for passenger cars, trucks, buses, and motorcycles, has been halted immediately.

The company cites rising costs for materials and logistics, outdated infrastructure, fluctuating financial performance, and changing market conditions as factors contributing to the closure. Despite implementing cost-cutting measures and efficiency enhancements, the company deemed the facility’s viability unsustainable.

Sumitomo Rubber is working with the United Steelworkers Union Local 135 to negotiate severance packages for affected employees and will provide job placement support services. They are also addressing concerns regarding existing orders, deliveries, and contract obligations.

Town of Tonawanda Supervisor Joseph Emminger expressed his concern for the employees and their families, stating, “Our first thoughts are with the more than 1,550 workers and their families who are impacted by this sudden plant closure. This is a very difficult time for them as they begin to deal with this unexpected news. They need to know the Town of Tonawanda stands with them.”

The closure of the Tonawanda plant represents a significant blow to the local economy and leaves a large number of workers facing an uncertain future. Further details about the closure and its impact are expected to be released in the coming days.
