Fri Nov 08 03:40:00 UTC 2024: ## Squirrel Euthanasia Fuels Election Fire, But Animal Welfare Takes Backseat

The death of Peanut, an Instagram-famous squirrel euthanized after being seized from its New York home, has become a bizarre election talking point, with Republicans using it to rally voters against the Democratic administration.

Republican vice-presidential nominee JD Vance claims that the incident has Donald Trump “fired up,” calling the euthanasia a “murder” and suggesting that Democrats are indifferent to the plight of pets. Billionaire Elon Musk, a Trump supporter, echoed this sentiment, urging voters to “vote for Peanut” and warning that if the government can euthanize a beloved pet, they “could do that to you.”

The uproar over Peanut, who amassed over 720,000 followers on Instagram, led to bomb threats at the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and a GoFundMe campaign raising $200,000 for animal rescue efforts.

This incident is the latest in a string of animal-related occurrences during the US presidential election, which experts say are being exploited for political gain rather than actual animal welfare.

During a televised debate, Trump falsely claimed that Haitian migrants were eating pets, furthering his anti-immigrant agenda. Meanwhile, Republican governor Kristi Noem admitted to shooting her pet dog, and right-wing figure Kevin Roberts revealed killing a neighbor’s pit bull.

Robert Kennedy Jr., a potential Trump cabinet member, has also shared bizarre stories involving a dead bear and a whale’s head, further adding to the election’s unconventional focus on animal encounters.

Wayne Pacelle, president of Animal Wellness Action, criticizes this trend, arguing that while Americans care about animals, these incidents are being used to advance other political agendas, such as anti-immigrant sentiment, rather than raising awareness about crucial issues like factory farming and animal cruelty.

Pacelle sees a missed opportunity for politicians to engage with animal welfare issues, which resonate with a broad spectrum of voters. He highlights the existence of serious problems like puppy mills and cockfighting, which deserve greater attention.

The 2024 US election has taken a peculiar turn with these animal-related controversies, demonstrating the potential for sensationalism and political manipulation even in seemingly unrelated issues.
