**Srinagar, November 8, 2024:** A new resolution calling for the restoration of Article 370 and Article 35A was introduced in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly today, igniting fresh controversy. The resolution, jointly signed by legislators from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), J&K Peoples Conference (JKPC), and Awami Ittehad Party (AIP), condemns the “unconstitutional and unilateral abrogation” of the articles in 2019.
The resolution, spearheaded by PDP MLA Fayyaz Mir, JKPC President Sajad Lone, and AIP MLA Khurshid Ahmad Sheikh, calls for the immediate reinstatement of the articles in their original form and the reversal of the Jammu & Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019. The lawmakers argue that these actions stripped Jammu and Kashmir of its special status and statehood, undermining the region’s identity, culture, and political autonomy.
The move, however, has been criticized by the National Conference (NC), the main opposition party. NC legislator Salman Sagar dismissed the resolution as invalid, stating that a similar resolution with wider support was already passed in the Assembly. He accused the signatories of seeking political advantage through a “fixed match.”
The introduction of this resolution comes as the debate over Article 370 and the future of Jammu and Kashmir continues to be a major point of contention in the region. The 2019 abrogation of the articles, which granted special status to the state, sparked widespread protests and a continued legal battle.
