**Lahore, Pakistan:** In a remarkable move, a three-year-old girl named Amal Sekhera has filed a petition against the Punjab provincial government for its failure to control the severe smog crisis engulfing the region.
Lahore, the provincial capital, has been consistently ranked as having the worst air quality in the world, with Air Quality Index (AQI) levels exceeding 800 and even reaching 1000 on numerous occasions. This hazardous air has forced residents to stay indoors, overwhelmed hospitals with respiratory issues, and put thousands at risk of developing respiratory diseases.
Amal’s petition, filed with the Lahore High Court, highlights the disproportionate impact of air pollution on children and the elderly. It argues that the government’s inaction violates the constitutional right to a clean and healthy environment, guaranteed under Article 99-A.
The petition comes as the smog emergency continues in Punjab, with schools closed until November 17th and residents urged to wear masks when venturing outdoors. The provincial government, acknowledging the gravity of the situation, warns that the smog is expected to persist for another ten days.
While Lahore is at the epicenter of the crisis, other cities like Multan and Gujranwala are also severely impacted by the ongoing weather conditions. Amal’s bold legal action serves as a stark reminder of the urgency to address this pressing environmental issue and ensure a healthier future for all.
