Fri Nov 08 08:24:35 UTC 2024: ## Jammu & Kashmir Assembly Plunges into Chaos over Special Status Resolution

**Srinagar, India:** The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly witnessed three consecutive days of unprecedented chaos over a resolution demanding the immediate restoration of special status to the region. The session, marked by shouting matches, physical confrontations, and a walkout by the BJP, highlighted the deep divisions over the 2019 abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A.

The conflict began with the introduction of a resolution by the National Conference (NC) advocating for the reinstatement of the special status. The BJP, vehemently opposed, labeled the resolution illegal and demanded its withdrawal. Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather rejected this demand, asserting that the House held the power to overturn any passed resolution.

The tension escalated when BJP members, led by their leader Sunil Sharma, disrupted the proceedings. Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) leader Sheikh Khursheed entered the assembly well, brandishing a banner demanding the restoration of the revoked articles. This sparked a physical confrontation as BJP members tore the banner and scuffled with other lawmakers.

The BJP’s continued protest, despite the Speaker’s pleas for order, led to the removal of several protesting members by assembly marshals. The incident saw three BJP MLAs escorted out, leading to accusations of disrespectful behavior and calls for disciplinary action from the ruling party.

Regional parties, including the PDP, People’s Conference, and AIP, joined forces to submit a new resolution denouncing the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A. The resolution, spearheaded by PDP and People’s Conference leaders, described the abrogation as unconstitutional and a breach of fundamental guarantees.

Meanwhile, the BJP, while maintaining the abrogation was a closed matter, accused regional parties of attempting to undermine the integrity of the Assembly.

The continuous uproar within the Assembly underscores the lingering debate over the abrogation of special status and highlights the deep political divide in Jammu and Kashmir. The situation remains tense, with no immediate resolution in sight.
