Thu Nov 07 12:28:10 UTC 2024: ## Vet Allowed to Reunite With Rescued Monkey in Heartwarming Court Decision

**Chennai, India -** In a heartwarming decision, the Madras High Court has allowed a veterinarian in Coimbatore to reunite with a partially-paralysed monkey he nursed back to health after a vicious dog attack. Dr V Vallaiappan, who cared for the monkey for 10 months, will be allowed to interact with the animal at the Arignar Anna Zoological Park in Chennai on Saturday. The court will then decide on his request for custody.

Dr Vallaiappan had petitioned the court last week after the monkey, which he found injured at a dog sterilization camp, was transferred to the zoo without any consideration for its welfare. The vet argued that the monkey, which suffered multiple dog bite injuries and is partially paralyzed, still needs care and has not fully recovered.

He stated that while the monkey may eat out of hunger, it might not be able to ensure enough nourishment on its own and could fall ill without his care. Dr Vallaiappan assured the court that he would provide regular updates on the monkey’s health and allow inspections by officials if granted custody.

The High Court, recognizing the bond between a human and an animal, ordered both Dr Vallaiappan and Tamil Nadu Forest Department officials to observe the interaction and submit reports by November 14. The judge expressed interest in understanding whether the monkey would recognize its rescuer after two weeks of separation.

The court’s decision has been lauded by animal welfare advocates, who believe it highlights the importance of considering the well-being of animals in such situations. It remains to be seen whether Dr Vallaiappan will be granted custody of the monkey, but the chance to reunite with its rescuer is a positive step for the animal’s well-being.
