**HOUSTON, TEXAS** – A prominent Islamist online educator, Imam Wisam Sharieff, has been charged by federal authorities with conspiracy to produce child pornography. The accusations, stemming from an FBI investigation, allege that Sharieff, a Qur’an recitation instructor for the Houston-based AlMaghrib Institute, encouraged a woman and her underage child to create and share sexually explicit videos.
The charges have shaken the Islamic community, with several prominent figures, including Sharieff’s wife, coming forward to condemn his actions. AlMaghrib Institute, where Sharieff led a dawah campaign called “Qur’an Revolution,” swiftly dismissed him upon the charges becoming public.
However, the institute’s initial response, dismissing the incident as a “policy violation” rather than a “crime,” sparked outrage. Many critics accused AlMaghrib of attempting to downplay the severity of the allegations and minimize the impact on its reputation.
The scandal has also brought to light a broader issue of alleged abuse protection within Islamic institutions. Texas Islamist Abu Najim Bin al-Iskandar argues that while the controversy is being blamed on AlMaghrib’s lack of gender segregation, the root of the problem lies in a pervasive tendency to protect abusers within Muslim organizations.
This is not the first controversy for the AlMaghrib Institute, which has a history of ties to controversial figures and organizations. In 2009, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, who attempted to detonate an explosive device on a Northwest Airlines flight, had attended classes at the institute. Additionally, former academic dean Yasir Qadhi has made inflammatory statements against Jews and Christians, and Sharieff himself studied with Pakistani imam Israr Ahmed, a vocal supporter of extremist groups like the Taliban.
The scandal has sparked intense debate within the Muslim community, raising questions about accountability and the responsibility of Islamic institutions to address allegations of abuse. It remains to be seen what long-term impact this case will have on the AlMaghrib Institute and the broader Islamic landscape.
