Wed Nov 06 19:45:24 UTC 2024: ## Kerala Makes Road Safety Classes Mandatory for Driving Licence Applicants

**Kochi, November 7, 2024:** In a bid to improve road safety and combat the alarming rate of road accidents in Kerala, the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) has announced mandatory road safety classes for all driving licence applicants in the Ernakulam region starting December 2.

Previously, these classes were only mandatory for drivers who had been involved in accidents or had their licenses suspended. However, the new directive, implemented under the current Transport Commissioner C.H. Nagaraju, will require all fresh applicants, as well as those seeking endorsements or revalidation, to attend these classes.

The classes will be held at an educational institution in Kalamassery and will cover up-to-date road safety guidelines, advancements in automobiles and road construction, and amendments made to the Motor Vehicles Act. Attendance is mandatory for all applicants before they can take the driving licence test.

MVD officials have also stated that individuals wanting to refresh their knowledge on recent safety guidelines, as well as those penalized for minor traffic violations, can also attend these sessions. All participants are required to bring their driving licence or learner’s licence, identity proof, and a mobile phone registered with the MVD.

The move comes in response to the high number of road accidents in Kerala, which tragically claim over 4,000 lives every year. The MVD hopes that these mandatory classes will foster a new driving culture and contribute significantly to reducing the number of road accidents in the state.
