Wed Nov 06 22:30:00 UTC 2024: ## Auburn Basketball Legend Sonny Smith Retires from Radio Commentary Role

AUBURN, Ala. – Auburn basketball fans will be saying goodbye to a familiar voice, as legendary coach Sonny Smith has announced his retirement from his role as a radio analyst for Auburn Sports Network. Smith, who served in the commentary role since 2012, will be stepping down after witnessing two SEC regular season titles, two SEC Tournament championships, and five NCAA Tournament appearances for the Tigers, including their first Final Four appearance in 2019.

“After years courtside as both a coach and a broadcaster, it is time to pass the mic and reflect,” Smith said in a statement. “That front row seat was more than a job; it was love for the game.”

Smith’s passion for the sport was evident in his insightful commentary, which went beyond statistics and scores. He brought the game to life, sharing his knowledge and unique perspective with Auburn fans across the country.

Smith’s career at Auburn stretches back to 1978, when he led the Tigers as head coach until 1989. During his tenure, he led the team to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1984, thanks in part to future Hall of Famer Charles Barkley, and their first SEC Tournament Championship in 1985. Smith also brought Auburn to five consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, the most in school history.

“Coach Smith is an Auburn icon, not only for his many historic accomplishments as Auburn’s head coach, but as an ambassador for the basketball program and athletics department during his time as its radio analyst,” said Auburn Sports Properties General Manager Ben Harling. “His knowledge of the game, sense of humor and unique perspective will certainly be missed on the radio broadcasts.”

Smith will be honored for his contributions as coach and commentator at the Auburn men’s game on December 8th at Neville Arena against Richmond. His position will be filled by Randall Dickey, who has served as a fill-in analyst for the past two seasons.

While Smith may be stepping away from the mic, he promises to continue supporting the Tigers from the stands. “I’ll still be the loudest person yelling at the refs from the stands,” he said, assuring fans they haven’t heard the last of him. “This is Coach Sonny Smith, signing off… War Eagle!”
