Thu Nov 07 11:15:26 UTC 2024: ## North Chotanagpur: Battleground for Jharkhand’s Political Power

**Giridih, Jharkhand (November 7, 2024):** As the Jharkhand Assembly elections heat up, the North Chotanagpur region emerges as a crucial battleground. Home to 25 constituencies spread across seven districts, this region is considered the gateway to power, attracting high-profile candidates and fierce competition.

The 2019 elections saw the BJP dominate with 12 out of 25 seats in this region. However, the upcoming elections promise a tighter race, with the INDIA bloc, led by the JMM, Congress, and CPI(ML), seeking to gain ground.

Key figures vying for power include Jharkhand’s first Chief Minister, Babulal Marandi (BJP), and Kalpana Soren (wife of incumbent Chief Minister Hemant Soren), contesting from Giridih and Gandey constituencies respectively. The region also sees the emergence of Jairam Mahato, a popular Kudmi leader who garnered significant support in the recent Lok Sabha elections.

The North Chotanagpur region is a crucial economic driver for Jharkhand, fueled by its coal mines, Bokaro Steel Plant, and fertile agricultural lands. However, the region also grapples with issues of poverty and the legacy of Naxalite activity.

The election campaign has been characterized by fierce campaigning from both the NDA and INDIA bloc. While the NDA has focused on issues like Bangladeshi infiltration and corruption, the INDIA bloc has countered by highlighting the misuse of central agencies and promoting the welfare schemes implemented by the Soren government.

The first phase of elections will be held on November 13, covering 7 constituencies in North Chotanagpur. The remaining 18 constituencies will vote on November 20. The outcome of these elections will have a significant impact on the political landscape of Jharkhand.
