Malayalam rom-com maestro Girish AD has stepped outside his comfort zone with his latest film, “I am Kathalan.” This techno-thriller, featuring frequent collaborator Naslen, tells the story of Vishnu, a struggling engineering student who resorts to hacking to escape his financial woes.
Naslen, known for his role in the blockbuster “Premalu,” delivers another captivating performance as Vishnu, navigating the complexities of a strained relationship with his girlfriend Shilpa (Anishma) while entangled in a web of cybercrime. While the film shares some thematic similarities with Girish’s previous works, it expands beyond the traditional boy-meets-girl narrative, focusing on the darker aspects of cyber espionage.
Girish’s signature minimalist storytelling style is evident in “I am Kathalan,” making it relatable for a wider audience. However, techno-thriller enthusiasts might find the premise somewhat simplistic.
The film, though enjoyable, doesn’t quite capture the magic of “Premalu,” despite the strong performances from Naslen and the supporting cast, including Anishma, Lijomol Jose, and Vineeth Vasudevan. Sajin Cherukayil’s script is well-crafted, but some of the comedic moments fall flat.
While Girish’s strength lies in modern love stories, the techno-thriller theme slightly restricts his natural flair. Nevertheless, he manages to weave in moments for die-hard romantics, with Naslen perfectly embodying the emotional nuances of the story.
Overall, “I am Kathalan” is a welcome departure for Girish AD, offering a glimpse into the world of cybercrime with familiar storytelling elements. While it may not be his most groundbreaking work, it’s a captivating watch, especially for fans of Naslen and Girish’s previous collaborations.
