Wed Nov 06 20:10:08 UTC 2024: ## Far-Right German Party AfD Expels Members Linked to “Terrorist” Group
The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has expelled three of its members following their arrest for alleged involvement in a “terrorist” group. The arrests were part of a wider police operation that targeted the Saxonian Separatists, a far-right organization accused of planning a violent overthrow of the German state.
The police operation, which involved raids in eastern Germany, Poland, and Austria, uncovered weapons, ammunition, and explosives, as well as evidence of the group’s Nazi-inspired ideology. The Interior Minister, Nancy Faeser, described the arrests as thwarting “early stage militant coup plans.”
The AfD has distanced itself from the Saxonian Separatists, stating that the group has no place in their party. Party leaders Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla have emphasized the AfD’s commitment to democracy and condemned the suspected neo-Nazi activities.
The expulsion of the three members comes as the AfD faces increasing scrutiny. While the party has gained traction in recent regional elections, with a victory in Thuringia being particularly notable, German security services have labeled the party as “right-wing extremist.” The AfD’s leader in Thuringia, Bjorn Hocke, has been fined twice for using Nazi slogans.
The AfD’s expulsion of members linked to the Saxonian Separatists signals a potential shift in strategy for the party. However, their strong performance in recent elections and the ongoing scrutiny of their activities suggest that the far-right party will continue to play a significant role in German politics.
