**Frankfurt, Germany** – A US citizen has been arrested in Germany on suspicion of offering classified information about the US military to China. The suspect, identified only as Martin D. under German privacy law, was apprehended in Frankfurt on Thursday.
According to German prosecutors, Martin D. had contacted Chinese officials in 2024 and offered to provide sensitive information about the US military. He is accused of having declared himself willing to act as an agent for a foreign intelligence agency. The suspect had worked for the US Armed Forces in Germany until recently.
The investigation is being conducted in close cooperation with German intelligence services. Both the US and China have yet to comment on the arrest.
This incident comes amidst heightened concerns about espionage in Germany, particularly linked to Russia and China. In recent months, Berlin has witnessed a rise in suspected spying cases involving both countries. Last month, Germany issued a warning about increased espionage risks from China and tightened security checks for personnel in sensitive government and business sectors.
The arrest of Martin D. follows a series of similar incidents. In April, three Germans were arrested on suspicion of providing technology that could benefit China’s navy. The same month, a European Union staffer working for a far-right German politician was accused of collaborating with Chinese intelligence.
Concerns about Chinese espionage have also been escalating across the West. In March, the US and UK accused China of cyberespionage targeting millions of individuals, including lawmakers, academics, journalists, and companies involved in defense contracting. China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Wang Wenbin dismissed these allegations as “hyped” and aimed at discrediting China.
