Thu Nov 07 09:56:31 UTC 2024: ## Andhra Pradesh Medical College Named After Renowned Biochemist

**VIJAYAWADA, November 7, 2024** – The Government Medical College in Eluru, Andhra Pradesh, will be named after the renowned biochemist Yellapragada SubbaRow, announced Health Minister Y. Satya Kumar Yadav on Thursday.

SubbaRow, a native of Bhimavaram, is celebrated for his groundbreaking discoveries, including the development of drugs for filariasis and his pioneering work on chemotherapy. He is also credited with revealing the role of phosphocreatine and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) in muscular activity.

The Minister, expressing his gratitude to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu for accepting the proposal, highlighted SubbaRow’s significant contributions to the field of biochemistry. He said SubbaRow’s research has saved millions of lives worldwide, particularly through his role in the development of antibiotics like tetracycline, which are used to treat infections like pneumonia.

The decision to name the college after SubbaRow follows a similar initiative last year, where the Government Medical College in Machilipatnam was named after Pingali Venkayya, the designer of the Indian national flag. Both colleges were among five new government medical colleges inaugurated by the YSRCP government.

Minister Yadav emphasized the NDA government’s commitment to honoring the legacies of great individuals, saying they are striving to keep their memories alive. This contrasts with some political parties who often name institutions after their own members, he added.
