Thu Nov 07 09:41:22 UTC 2024: ## Thai Woman Acquitted in 2015 Bangkok Shrine Bombing Case

**Bangkok, Thailand** – A Thai court has acquitted a woman accused of involvement in the 2015 bombing at Bangkok’s Erawan Shrine, which killed 20 people and injured 120. Wanna Suansan, one of three suspects arrested in connection with the attack, was found not guilty on Thursday, November 7, 2024, due to insufficient evidence linking her to the crime.

Suansan, who voluntarily returned to Thailand from Turkey in 2017 to turn herself in, was accused of leasing an apartment to the alleged bombers. Authorities claimed to have found gunpowder, fertilizer, and other bomb-making materials in the apartment, but the court ruled that prosecutors failed to provide evidence proving her presence at the bombing scene, her involvement in the suspects’ escape, or her contact with them.

The two other suspects, ethnic Uyghurs Yusufu Mieraili and Bilal Mohammad, are still being tried separately. They are alleged to have planted the bomb and are facing charges of murder, attempted murder, and illegal possession of explosives. Their trial is ongoing and is currently in the stage of examining witnesses.

Thai authorities initially attributed the bombing to a revenge attack by a people-smuggling gang whose activities were disrupted by police. However, some analysts believe the bombing may have been carried out by Uyghur separatists protesting Thailand’s forced repatriation of Uyghurs to China in 2015.

Suansan, who spent seven years waiting for the verdict, expressed relief at her acquittal, saying she was happy to finally have received justice. She also acknowledged the damage the accusations had inflicted on her family.

The acquittal raises further questions about the evidence presented against Suansan and may add another layer of complexity to the ongoing investigation into the Erawan Shrine bombing.
