Wed Nov 06 16:42:58 UTC 2024: ## Trump’s Return Raises Concerns About Climate Action at Upcoming COP
**Baku, Azerbaijan** – Donald Trump’s re-election as President of the United States has cast a shadow of uncertainty over the upcoming 29th annual climate conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan. Climate experts are concerned about the potential impact of his return to power on global efforts to address climate change.
Trump’s previous presidency was marked by his decision to withdraw the U.S. from the Paris Climate Agreement, a move that garnered widespread criticism. He characterized the Agreement as a “bad deal” that negatively impacted the coal industry and defense spending.
While the U.S. rejoined the Agreement under President Biden, the prospect of Trump’s re-election has reignited worries about his stance on climate change. His campaign’s support for fracking and skepticism of the scientific consensus on human-caused climate change have further fueled anxieties.
“The world is different from the last time he came to power,” said Arti Khosla, Director of Climate Trends. “Climate impacts have ravaged every part of the world, and climate change is much more visible as a determinant of global chaos.”
Khosla fears that Trump’s return could lead to a lack of progress on crucial issues like increasing climate financing and resolving contentious trade matters.
The COP29 in Baku will be a critical stage for global climate negotiations, with a focus on agreeing to a new financial target for developed countries to transfer to developing nations for climate action.
Despite the concerns, some experts remain optimistic, highlighting potential opportunities for green energy trade between India and the U.S. Arunabha Ghosh, CEO of the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), points out that India can capitalize on the U.S.’s role as a net fuel exporter to ensure its developmental needs.
However, the overall sentiment among climate experts remains cautious. Trump’s re-election is seen as a significant obstacle in the global fight against climate change, particularly at a time when the world is facing increasingly dire consequences of inaction.
