Wed Nov 06 20:26:49 UTC 2024: ## Kochi Races Against Time to Complete Sewage Treatment Plant Before Funding Lapses
**KOCHI, November 7, 2024:** The Kochi Corporation is facing a tight deadline to complete the ₹18.6-crore sewage treatment project (STP) at Edakochi. The project, funded under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), is scheduled to be finished by December 31st. Failure to meet this deadline could result in the loss of ₹7.75 crore in Central funding.
Currently, only 40% of the project is complete. The project faced delays due to initial public protests, but eventually proceeded after extensive discussions with stakeholders.
While the Corporation is seeking an extension from AMRUT authorities, officials are also working to ensure that the Central funds are not lost. The ₹6.5 crore required for road restoration works will be covered by the Central share, which has already been transferred to the Corporation’s account.
This project, the first standalone sewage treatment plant in Kochi, is being implemented in Division 16. It will treat wastewater from approximately 2,200 households in the area. The treated water can be reused for construction purposes.
