**Buenos Aires, Argentina** – The body of former One Direction singer Liam Payne, who died after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires last month, was repatriated to Britain on Wednesday. A flight carrying Payne’s remains departed from Ezeiza International Airport at 1:58 pm local time, bound for London.
Payne’s father, Geoff, was seen at the airport minutes before the flight’s departure. Argentine media reported that Payne’s body was transferred from the British Cemetery in Buenos Aires, where it had been embalmed, earlier on Wednesday.
The 31-year-old singer was found dead on October 16 after plunging from the balcony of his third-floor room at the CasaSur Hotel. His death sparked global grief and condolences from family, former bandmates, fans, and industry colleagues. It also prompted a conversation about the mental health struggles faced by young stars in the music industry.
Payne had spoken publicly about battling substance abuse and the challenges of fame at a young age. Hotel staff had previously called emergency services twice to report a guest who was intoxicated and causing damage to a hotel room.
Geoff Payne visited the makeshift memorial outside the CasaSur hotel, where fans have left tributes in the form of letters, photos, and flowers, on Tuesday.
One Direction, one of the highest-grossing live acts in the world, went on indefinite hiatus in 2016. Payne enjoyed some solo success but his career had slowed in recent years.
