**WASHINGTON, D.C.** – President Joe Biden is reportedly planning to fast-track billions of dollars in security assistance to Ukraine before his term ends in January, aiming to strengthen Kyiv’s position ahead of Donald Trump’s potential return to the White House.
Trump, who won the recent election, has expressed skepticism about the scale of U.S. support for Ukraine and vowed to end the war with Russia quickly, though without specifying how. His stance has raised concerns about the future of Washington’s aid to Ukraine under a Republican-controlled government.
A senior Biden administration official told Reuters that the administration plans to “put Ukraine in the strongest position possible” by pushing through the aid package.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy congratulated Trump on his victory and spoke with the president-elect on Wednesday, emphasizing the importance of strong U.S. leadership for peace.
The proposed aid package would include $9 billion in military assistance, significantly boosting Ukraine’s defenses. This includes $4.3 billion from the U.S. House’s recent approval, along with previous allocations and funding for new weapons purchases.
The Biden administration declined to comment on the reports. However, the U.S. has already provided over $64.1 billion in military assistance to Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion in 2022.
Analysts are divided on whether Washington will continue supporting Ukraine under a Republican administration. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell declined to comment on the issue, while Trump has suggested Ukraine might have to cede territory to Russia, a proposal rejected by Kyiv and Biden.
Vice President-elect JD Vance has also criticized Ukraine aid, advocating for focusing on domestic priorities instead.
The situation highlights the potential shift in U.S. policy towards Ukraine under a Trump presidency. The outcome of the upcoming Congressional elections and the potential for a change in the balance of power will further influence the direction of U.S. support for Kyiv.
