**Srinagar, [Date]**: The Jammu & Kashmir Assembly witnessed chaotic scenes today as members clashed over a resolution seeking the restoration of the region’s special status under Article 370 of the Constitution. The day began with BJP MLAs protesting against the resolution passed yesterday, leading to a series of scuffles and heated exchanges.
The resolution, passed without debate yesterday, expresses concern over the removal of Article 370 and calls upon the Centre to engage in dialogue with elected representatives for its restoration. It was supported by the National Conference, PDP, and People’s Conference, among other parties.
Today’s unrest began when BJP MLAs protested the resolution, with Leader of the Opposition Sunil Sharma demanding its withdrawal. The situation escalated when Langate MLA Sheikh Khurshid jumped into the Well holding a banner demanding the restoration of Article 370 and Article 35A, as well as the release of political prisoners.
A scuffle ensued as BJP members lunged towards the banner, leading to a confrontation with Peoples Conference leader Sajad Lone, who intervened to try and stop them. The marshals eventually restored order, but tensions remained high throughout the day.
Lone criticized the National Conference for not coming to Khurshid’s aid during the scuffle, accusing them of political opportunism. He also questioned their support for the resolution, claiming it was a “drama” and a ploy to portray themselves as allies of the BJP.
The BJP is staunchly opposed to the resolution, stating they will not allow the House to function until it is withdrawn. They have accused Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather of bias, alleging he is acting as a National Conference leader.
Outside the Assembly, BJP leader Smriti Irani criticized the National Conference and Congress, accusing the INDIA alliance of waging a “war against the Constitution” in Jammu & Kashmir.
The resolution comes weeks after the National Conference-Congress alliance won the Assembly elections in the Union Territory, marking the first polls since the removal of Article 370 and the bifurcation of Jammu & Kashmir in 2019. The restoration of special status was a key promise in the National Conference’s election manifesto.
