**TIRUPPUR, November 7, 2024:** A planned protest by the Kuravar community in Palavanjipalayam, Tiruppur, against water stagnation in their locality was called off after the Tiruppur Corporation responded to their concerns.
The community members had planned to camp outside the Corporation office with tents and provisions to highlight the issue, citing the unresponsiveness of the local body to their numerous complaints. They alleged that residents of dominant castes in nearby areas were intentionally releasing water onto a one-acre parcel of land allocated to them by the government. This, they claimed, had resulted in unhygienic conditions and health problems.
Following the recent rains, the water stagnation had worsened, leading to displacement of some community members. In response to the planned protest, the Corporation deployed men and machinery to clear the stagnant water.
“Most of the water has been drained out,” said Tamilvendan, former district unit secretary of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi. “The Revenue Department has also sent officials and a surveyor to facilitate the proper handover of the land with patta document to the community members.”
The timely action by the Corporation and the Revenue Department prevented the protest from taking place.
