Thu Nov 07 00:25:10 UTC 2024: ## Jammu & Kashmir Assembly Demands Restoration of Special Status, BJP Protests
**Srinagar:** The Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Wednesday passed a resolution demanding the restoration of the state’s special status and urged the central government to engage in dialogue with the state’s representatives on this matter. This move was met with strong opposition from BJP lawmakers who protested the resolution by tearing up copies and shouting slogans against the Speaker.
The resolution expressed concern over the unilateral abrogation of Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu & Kashmir. The resolution was passed without any debate, through a voice vote.
The National Conference, which brought the resolution, stated that it was fulfilling a promise made in its election manifesto. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah asserted, “The assembly has done its duty.” The resolution was also supported by PDP and CPM members.
The BJP, however, criticized the resolution, calling it a political stunt and a distraction from the real issues facing the people of Jammu & Kashmir. They argued that the special status was a relic of the past and that the region was better off without it.
The resolution comes amidst growing calls for the restoration of Article 370, which was revoked by the Modi government in 2019, leading to the bifurcation of the state into two Union Territories: Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
