Thu Nov 07 13:04:05 UTC 2024: ## Bihar’s Celebrated Chhath Puja Begins: Preparations in Full Swing

**Buxar, Bihar:** The renowned Chhath Puja, a festival of immense faith in Bihar, has begun. Devotees will offer their first prayers to the setting sun at various Chhath ghats across the state today. In preparation for the festival, numerous stunning idols of Surya Bhagwan (Sun God) have been erected at locations like Ganga ghats, ponds, and canals.

One such hub of activity is the Sohni Patti area of Buxar, where dozens of families are involved in the creation of these idols. It’s a generations-old tradition for these families to dedicate their skills to crafting these elaborate statues. The finished idols will be transported to their designated pandals tonight or tomorrow morning, ready for worship beginning Thursday evening.

**Families Dedicate 15 Days to Creation:**

Manish Kumar Prajapati, a sculptor from the Kumhar Tola area of Sohni Patti, explained that the majority of the idols are complete and are currently undergoing final painting. He shared that they received orders for three idols this year from Sarimpura, Ramrekha Ghat, and one for a puja committee in Bihia (Bhojpur). The entire family has been working tirelessly for the past 15 days to create these intricate pieces.

**Idols Range in Height and Price:**

Another sculptor, Sanju, is responsible for crafting idols for the Siddhnath Ghat, Malhachkia, and Mahila Gaon areas of the district. His creations, ranging from 5 to 10 feet tall, are adorned with chariots and represent a significant investment, costing anywhere between ₹5,000 to ₹30,000.

**The Art of Idol Making:**

Creating these idols is a complex and meticulous process. The sculptors use materials such as paddy husk, straw, bamboo, POP (Plaster of Paris), and high-quality colors. The idols are then carefully dried and painted.

**No Change in Prices This Year:**

Sanju noted that the price of the idols remains similar to last year’s rates. The entire family participates in the process, ensuring that the idols are finished on time and delivered to the puja committees.

The festival of Chhath Puja is a testament to the devotion and artistry of the people of Bihar. The meticulous craftsmanship and dedication displayed in creating these idols add a vibrant and spiritual touch to this significant religious occasion.
