Wed Nov 06 05:45:13 UTC 2024: ## Renowned Mohiniyattam Dancer Vijayalakshmi to Showcase Traditional and Innovative Works at BIC

**Bangalore, November 6, 2024:** Acclaimed Mohiniyattam dancer Vijayalakshmi will grace the stage at the Bangalore International Centre (BIC) tonight, presenting a captivating repertoire that blends traditional techniques with her own innovative choreography.

The performance, scheduled for 7 pm, will feature a diverse selection of works, including excerpts from Jayadeva’s Gita Govindam, Tulsidas’s Ramcharitmanas, and the dancer’s own creations like “Rain” and “Beyond Grace.”

Daughter of legendary Mohiniyattam dancer Bharati Shivaji, Vijayalakshmi is known for her constant exploration of the dance form, pushing boundaries and venturing into uncharted territories. She attributes her passion to her mother, who inspired her to embrace Mohiniyattam at the young age of 11.

“My mother’s work in reviving and restructuring the dance form, giving it a new lease of life, deeply inspired me,” she shares.

Throughout her career, Vijayalakshmi has defied comparisons to her mother, forging a unique artistic path with her own choreographies. “My works became unique and were different from what any other Mohiniyattam dancer had ever done,” she says, acknowledging her mother’s vital role in her foundation and growth.

Vijayalakshmi highlights the inherent femininity and relevance of Mohiniyattam to women globally. “It epitomises all the core values and principles of femininity,” she states, emphasizing the form’s healing, therapeutic, and empowering aspects.

The performance promises an enthralling journey through the world of Mohiniyattam, showcasing both traditional and innovative elements. The evening will conclude with a Q&A session moderated by artist and curator Masoom Parmar. Entry is free.
