Tue Nov 05 00:32:00 UTC 2024: ## Abortion Rights Emerge as Key Issue for Indian American Women Voters in US Presidential Election

**Washington D.C., November 5, 2024:** The issue of abortion rights is emerging as a significant factor influencing Indian American women’s voting preferences in the upcoming US presidential election. This demographic group, the second-largest immigrant community in the US, is leaning towards supporting candidates who champion reproductive rights.

Following the Supreme Court’s overturn of Roe v. Wade in 2022, which ended the constitutional right to abortion, concerns about further restrictions on reproductive rights have become a top-tier policy issue. Indian American women, in particular, are deeply affected by this development and see it as a significant threat to their autonomy and freedom of choice.

“It is my body, it should be my choice. As simple as that,” stated Priya, a marketing professional in New Jersey, reflecting the sentiment of many Indian American women.

The Indian American Attitudes Survey (IAAS) conducted in September and October revealed a striking gender gap in voting preferences. The survey found that 67% of Indian American women plan to vote for Kamala Harris, compared to 53% of men. This gap is even more pronounced among younger voters.

While abortion rights are a key issue for many Indian American women, it is not the sole determinant of their voting choices, notes Sonal Sharma, an immigration lawyer. “It is a complex issue… We will have to see what happens,” she added.

Despite the complexity, the importance of abortion rights for Indian American women has not gone unnoticed by political campaigns. Harris has made it a central theme in her campaign strategy, and reproductive rights advocacy groups are actively engaging with Indian American voters.

With the election drawing near, the issue of abortion rights is likely to remain a crucial factor in mobilizing and influencing this important demographic group.
