Wed Nov 06 00:00:00 UTC 2024: ## North Korean Troops Engage in Combat with Ukraine, Pentagon Warns of Escalating Conflict
**KYIV, Ukraine (AP)** – The war in Ukraine took a dramatic turn on Tuesday as Ukrainian troops reported engaging in combat with North Korean units recently deployed to assist Russia. This marks the first official confirmation of direct involvement by Pyongyang in the conflict, escalating tensions and raising concerns about a potential global shift in security dynamics.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov confirmed the engagement, describing it as a “small-scale” skirmish that signifies North Korea’s direct involvement in Europe’s largest conflict since World War II. He stated that North Korean soldiers, integrated with Russian troops and often misidentified on their uniforms, were deployed in the Kursk region of Russia, bordering Ukraine.
Andrii Kovalenko, head of Ukraine’s counter-disinformation branch, also reported artillery strikes on North Korean troops in the Kursk region, further corroborating the Ukrainian account.
Intelligence assessments from the U.S., South Korea, and Ukraine indicate that Pyongyang has sent up to 12,000 North Korean combat troops to Russia under an agreement with Moscow. The Pentagon confirmed the deployment of at least 10,000 soldiers in the region, with the possibility of further reinforcements from North Korea’s substantial 1.3 million-strong army.
The deployment of North Korean troops in Russia is viewed as a significant shift in European and Asian security relations. Experts argue that despite potential challenges in integration due to communication barriers and differing military doctrines, the presence of East Asian forces in a European conflict represents a significant shift in global security.
The North Korean troops, whose combat experience and capabilities remain unknown, are adding to Ukraine’s increasingly challenging battlefield situation. Russian advances have accelerated, with gains of up to 9 kilometers (more than 5 miles) in some areas of the Donetsk region, fueled by superior troop numbers and relentless recruitment efforts by the Kremlin.
Ukrainian officials continue to call for increased and expedited military support from their Western allies, expressing concern about the slow pace of assistance.
Meanwhile, Russia has intensified long-range aerial attacks on civilian areas in Ukraine, with a Tuesday morning attack on the southern city of Zaporizhzhia resulting in six fatalities and 23 injuries. Ukrainian officials, including President Volodymyr Zelensky, have condemned the attacks and called for stronger action by international allies to stop the violence.
