**Washington, November 6, 2024:** Suhas Subramanyam, a Virginia State Senator, has made history by becoming the first Indian American elected to the US Congress from Virginia and the entire East Coast. Subramanyam, a Democrat, defeated Republican Mike Clancy in the race for the 10th Congressional District of Virginia, a traditionally Democratic stronghold.
“I am honored and humbled that the people of Virginia’s 10th District put their trust in me,” said Subramanyam. “This district is my home, and the issues our community faces are personal to our family. It is an honor to continue serving this district in Washington.”
Subramanyam joins the “Samosa Caucus,” a group of Indian American members of Congress that now includes Ami Bera, Raja Krishnamoorthi, Ro Khanna, Pramila Jayapal, and Shri Thanedar. The caucus is known for its advocacy on issues important to the Indian American community.
Subramanyam, whose parents immigrated to the US in the late 1970s, emphasizes the importance of a strong India-US relationship. “The US and India have a naturally strong relationship,” he said, citing the large Indian diaspora, economic partnerships, and potential for strategic defense collaboration.
His victory marks a significant milestone for Indian American representation in US politics, with the Samosa Caucus continuing to grow and advocate for issues impacting the community.
